Welcome to Kuopio! Facts about good canoeing waters | Things to remember | Here we are!
We spent a lot of time last summer looking for a suitable spot that would meet our demanding criteria. We had to find a place that had existing sleeping quarters already, that was located on a peaceful, as well as on a beautiful spot, but it had to be relatively close to the civilization and airplane connections, and furthermore still, a spot that had good possibilities for making canoe trips nearby. After many different coincidences, we ended up working together with Adventure- and Training center of Varapäre. This arrangement makes it possible for the paddlers now to choose whether to sleep in the more affordable hostel rooms, or in the higher quality hotel rooms. There are three saunas, a restaurant and a bar that are open throughout the summer season. The meals can also be served in a warm spirited Lapp hut. A fine place for sure!
And what comes to the most important thing, canoeing, we concluded that after checking out tens of maps and hundreds of kilometers of actual paddling, the town of Kuopio has been established on a good location. It is very nice to paddle up north on Kallavesi to the Iisalmi direction, to the west through Juurusvesi to Muruvesi and further to Tahkovuori, or down south to the lake Saimaa on either side of Soisalo island. Lakeside Tours Finland that has arranged canoe services and trips in the southern Lakeland area of Finland from the shores of lake Puulavesi in Kangasniemi for
six summers in a row already, started to offer these services also in the northern Savo area in the summer of 2003, covering the lake Saimaa and the water way of Vuoksi areas. Saimaa Canoe Service site of activities is located on the shore of Kallavesi on the outskirts of Kuopio in the small village of
Toivala.
When it comes to the means of transportation, it is only 17 kilometers to Kuopio by a car, and only 7 kilometers to the airport from where we are located at. Buses run close by.
